Imagine this...

On top of all that, you can’t work because you need (and want) to be with your child; to hold their hand and comfort them during this very scary time.

At only 3 years old, Myka Mangos and his family are about to endure a two-year treatment of intensive chemotherapy for Leukemia - a worst fear for any parent.
By early March, Myka will have a procedure to install a port in his chest, spinal tap, bone marrow extractions, steroid treatments and will have begun his first round of chemotherapy.
“This has been a complete stab to our hearts. I couldn’t think of anything worse. We just felt so helpless when he was diagnosed and the guilt that comes with it – as a parent you just want your children to be happy and healthy” Alex admits.
Leukemia is the most common cancer in children and teens, accounting for almost 1 out of 3 cancers. Overall, however, childhood leukemia is a rare disease.
The side effects Myka has suffered would force an adult to take to their bed. Constipation, incontinence, leg pain, headaches, non-diabetic hypoglycemia, avascular necrosis, peripheral neuropathy, the list goes on.
Myka’s joint pain started in December 2022 along with high temperatures and ongoing fevers.
“We visited the doctor so many times these past few months and was prescribed the usual Panadol and Ibuprofen and to monitor him. It wasn’t until he begun refusing to get up or walk that we recognized this must be more serious. Now we can’t even put a shirt on him without him crying”.
Alex's family is no stranger to cancer, having lost their father in 1991 to tongue cancer and a mother who has battled both Breast Cancer and Hodgkins Lymphoma.
“My dad was a Greek immigrant, he came to Australia to build a life and family. He got struck down too early, it was unexpected since he was neither a smoker or drinker”.
“Times were very tough growing up after losing my dad… and when mum was diagnosed, my brother and I were devastated, we thought we were going to lose her too. We are very thankful that she has managed to beat Cancer but it took a huge toll on us both mentally and financially when growing up”.
Alex and Sarah have had much to process and haven't had adequate time to assess exactly what the future holds for them.
The reality is the same for most Australians, who rely on both partners to be working in order to keep paying the bills.
“The road ahead is scary as we don’t know what to expect. I can’t believe this is happening to my little boy. We fear for our youngest son, Santiago and prey for his health too, we know he will be watching his brother go through this terrible time,” Alex says.
Alex turns to Myka and puts his hand on his head with a slight pause, it dawns on him…
“He has such a beautiful head of hair – he hasn’t ever had a haircut… it’s going to be hard when he has to shave it all off, no child deserves this,” Alex vents as his eyes begin to well up.
Given Alex and Sarah’s position, we don’t blame them for not considering what lies ahead but they understand that supporting the family and continuing to generate income is going to be difficult. His wife Sarah, is not in a job that allows the ability to work remotely and the high cost of living will force Alex to continue working full time or perhaps consider selling assets such his car to keep them going.
